Summer of 62
I had just finished my Sophomore year at Roby and Crickett had just completed the 7th grade. At the end of that school year we would both agree that we were home. We loved the town, the people, the school. We loved this time in both of our lives. She had a boy she liked and I was dating Lela Adams when school ended. I would drive the 12 miles out to her house a couple of times a week.
A hail storm came thru Roby and beat every roof in town off. I can remember being in the Huey station wagon and dragging high center on hail stones. Bob Waddell and I roofed that summer. I learned that I did not want to be a roofer. But hey…$1.00 an hour and you could work 10-12 hours a day…thats hard to beat.

We made a trip up to my dad’s brother in Channing, TX…north of Amarillo. This photo was taken in July of 1962 with Crick sitting on the state line marker at TexLine.
There are a number of things this photo brings to mind. How pretty a girl she was and how sweet. In this photo she looks amazingly like our mother. She had always been my biggest fan and I knew it…never had a doubt. It was around this time that our baby sister was conceived (born March 14th of 1963). This also was the quiet before the storm as July 30th would change all our lives. If Crick had been in my shadow before it was about to get even worse for her.
I do miss her.
